US film ‘Passengers’ has taken the number one slot at box offices in countries around the world.
The romantic sci-fi feature film by Sony Pictures edged out Disney’s ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’, bringing in a global total of USD238.1 million.
‘Passengers’ tells the story of two people who awaken 90 years too soon from an induced hibernation state on board a spaceship bound for a new planet.
The film opened at USD 17.5 million at the Chinese box office on January 13, following heavy promotion and marketing tie-ins, as well as a visit to Beijing by the picture’s stars, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt.
The full weekend on director Morten Tyldum’s sci-fi flick was USD32.5 million in 65 markets across the globe, also displacing ‘Rogue One’ for the top international spot.
In Germany, ‘Passengers’ held the number one slot for the second straight weekend with a local tally of USD8.2 million to date.
Meanwhile in Australia and France, the American film took in USD8.1 million for each country. In Brazil, the picture gained USD5.7 million at the box office for the weekend.
Japan has yet to launch ‘Passengers’ in theaters, though the picture is expected to be released on March 24.
‘Passengers’ opened in the United States on December 21, 2016, grossing USD127.3 million to date in that country.
